Velta among the first to successfully complete entries on the new Customs Declaration Service

Customs clearance

Velta, in partnership with our duty management software provider, DataFreight, have successfully completed one of the first customs declarations utilising HMRC’s new Customs Declaration Service (CDS), due to be rolled out across the industry in the future.

The CDS, a replacement for HMRC’s aging customs software CHIEF (Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight), will provide additional benefits for importers and exporters, including:

  • A wider range of services will be available through CDS including the capability to view your previous import and export data on pre-defined reports, checking tariffs, applying for new authorisations and simplifications and checking your duty deferment statement.
  • Enhanced online features including digital self-service tools, how-to-guides and checklists of useful information.

Live functionality for CDS is currently limited to supplementary declarations submitted directly to HMRC for goods entering free circulation, either directly or from customs warehousing.  The introduction of CDS will follow a phased implementation programme. Import declarations will be next to be processed using CDS, with exports following at a later date.

Originally CDS was due to be rolled out from August 2018, however this was postponed due to a delay in the deployment of trade testing facilities that were due to have been made available at the end of July 2018.

Velta International General Manager, Les Hall commented “We have processed a number of entries since the initial declaration with no issues. Being chosen to be amongst the first customs departments in the UK to implement the new system, is a testament to the capabilities, experience and knowledge of our Customs Compliance team.”

Ian Brown, DataFreight’s MD said “DataFreight was selected by HMRC as one of the first five software houses to trial the initial CDS development environment back in December 2017. Since then we have been working tirelessly to produce a CDS-compliant system that could be deployed in the CDS live environment. We have worked very closely with Velta on this project, to ensure that Velta’s CDS migration progressed as seamlessly as possible. Velta’s successful migration to the CDS platform means that DataFreight is currently one of only two software houses to have implemented CDS in the live environment.”

Coincidently, Velta went live on the new CDS system in February, the same month of the 10th anniversary of Velta holding AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) status, which recognises that Velta offers a secure, reliable and compliant supply chain.
